From the Church Office (August 2010)

Dear Walnut Creek Members and Friends,

   I am writing you this note while my family is vacationing in Red River, New Mexico. It is nice to be in the cool mountains for awhile this time of year.

   We have had a good and busy summer. Our children's and youth programs, camps and activities have been great successes. Thank you to all who served and gave this summer to make it all happen.

   In just a few weeks we will be talking about what we did this summer as we prepare to go back to school and our more normal routines.

   I want to encourage you to get back into the routine of attending all of our weekly worship services and participating in a Sunday School class. People of all ages enjoy Sunday School because of the Bible discussions, prayer, ministry and fellowship that takes place every week. Been out of Sunday School for awhile? Start back this week! Never joined a class? Check one out this Sunday!

   I also encourage you to get back into the routine of daily personal Bible study and prayer. We all need the daily encouragement, teaching and reminders that spending even a short time with God each day provides. I'd be glad to help you get started. Just ask!

   The personnel committee is continuing to search for new leadership for our youth ministry. Please continue to pray diligently for the personnel committee and the one God is calling to serve with us.

   Remember the sick, hurting and spiritually lost among us. You may be the answer to someone's prayers. Invite someone to come to church with you this Sunday.
                                                                          By His Grace,
                                                                              Pastor Shane

Worship Notes

   Last month I started examining "What is Worship". I concluded that we came to a starting place for worship when we realize that we are nothing, and that we have no hope without Him. Understanding those truths, et us further examine what Biblical worship is.
   As defined by Dr. Bruce H. Leafblad, retired professor of worship at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; "Worship is communion with God in which believers, by grace, center their minds attention and their hearts affection on the Lord. Humbly glorifying God in response to his greatness and His word."
   There are several different types of worship services, each with a distinct purpose;
  1. The worship of God – directed to God.
  2. Evangelistic worship – directed to the non-Christian.
  3. Bible study – directed to the Christian.
  4. All music service – directed to the Christian
  5. Missions' service – directed to the Christian.
  6. Family emphasis – directed to the families of the congregation.

   Christian entertainment has invaded our churches today, and is advertised as "worship". It is not. At best, it is musical entertainment. That is not to say that a service that is largely music cannnot be worship. We have the enormous task of keeping worship God centered and not allowing it to become entertainment.
                                                                               More next month;
                                                                               Until He Comes, Dave.
